What is the Michigan Rural Property Inventory?
The MRPI contains information on property (land and buildings) created as part of a WPA project during the Great Depression. This one was done in 1939.
The information may include diagrams (with measurements) of improvements to property, including houses, barns, garages; details on construction dates, sources of heat and light, legal description, and the name of owner at the time.
How do I use it to find my house?
Check the plat maps to determine which subdivision your house is in. The McGaffey, Chapin, and Kellogg Addition consists of everything west of Kalamazoo St. and south of Chicago Rd. The Laird, Murray, & Hotchin Addition consists of property south of Kalamazoo St. and east from Peck St. to a little beyond Murray.
The Assessor’s Plat consists of property along Chicago Rd. and one block to the south, two blocks to the north. The Original Plat of White Pigeon consists of property west of Kalamazoo St. and north of Chicago Rd.
*Note: If you don't find your property in these pages, please check with the St. Joseph County Historical Society, where the original records are kept. Many pages weren't legible when scanned and therefore weren't included on our website.
